Desmond Tutu was a South African Anglican bishop and theologian, widely known for his work as an anti-apartheid activist and advocate for peace. He was born on October 7, 1931 in Klerksdorp, South Africa and passed away on December 26, 2021. Tutu served as the Bishop of Lesotho in 1976-1978 and later became the first Black General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches in 1978. He was a staunch critic of apartheid and worked alongside Nelson Mandela to bring an end to the system. Tutu was also the first Black person to hold the highest position in the Anglican Church in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his nonviolent activism during the anti-apartheid movement. Tutu was a teacher, author, and lecturer and was widely regarded as the voice of the South African people during this time.
