In 1978, Allan Bakke, a white man, applied for admission to the University of California Medical School and was rejected despite having a strong benchmark score of 468 out of 500. Bakke sued the university, arguing that their admissions policy violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The Supreme Court announced their decision in Regents of the University of California v. Bakke on June 28, 1978, with six different opinions from the justices. However, none of the opinions received a majority of support. In a split decision, the Court ordered the school to admit Bakke, ruling that the use of any racial quota for admission purposes is a violation of the Equal Protection Clause. Bakke, who currently lives in Minnesota, has never given an interview after the case was decided. The Court's decision ultimately overturned the university's admission policy as a violation of Bakke's equal protection rights under the Fourteenth Amendment.
