A team of researchers from Griffith University has carbon-dated a drawing of a human figure found on a cave wall in Peñablanca, Cagayan, making it the oldest directly dated rock art in Southeast Asia at 3,500 years old. This discovery surpasses the previous record held by petroglyphs in Rizal province which date back to the third millennium B.C. The drawing in Peñablanca was first discovered during a National Museum of the Philippines expedition and is part of a collection of 127 figural carvings. This is the first time that cave art in the Philippines has been directly dated using carbon dating.
