According to data, 2-4% of Americans have adopted, while 1/3 have considered it. In the U.S, over 1.5 million children have been adopted, which equates to approximately 2% of the population. However, only about 18,000 out of the 4 million children born each year are voluntarily relinquished for adoption. The number of adoptions in the U.S. has been on the decline since 2004, with only 4,059 children adopted in 2018. Domestic infant adoptions have remained consistent at around 18,000 per year since 2014. Around 200-300 children are adopted from different countries, such as Ethiopia, Haiti, India, South Korea, and Ukraine, each year. Every year, more than 50,000 children are adopted through foster care. The number of adoptions in 2020 fell to 95,306, including step-parent adoptions. A report from 2008-2012 estimated that around 115,353 children were adopted in the U.S. in fiscal years.
