The Freedom of Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) organization annually reviews thousands of potential cases involving individuals and groups whose rights are at risk. Their team of legal and advocacy experts assists individuals and groups in defending their First Amendment rights. Recently, the organization was disappointed by a ruling in a case involving a former professor at Collin College whose First Amendment rights were violated. Private universities are not directly bound by the First Amendment, but many uphold similar values of free speech. FIRE publishes a list of the "worst colleges for free speech" and files lawsuits against colleges and universities with unconstitutional speech codes. In a recent case, a professor's First Amendment rights were allegedly violated by the school's response to his criticism and advocacy for the removal of Confederate statues.
