Dozens of studies have shown that genetic mutations in the PCSK9 gene are linked to coronary artery disease and high levels of LDL-C and total cholesterol. These mutations were also associated with increased triglyceride and LDL-C levels, leading to the potential for improved cardiovascular health through inhibiting this gene. Researchers have identified multiple single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at the PCSK9 locus that are linked to LDL-C and heart disease. Follow-up studies may reveal more information about the effect of these mutations on cardiovascular risk and response to cholesterol-lowering treatments.
