According to recent reports, there is a concerning attrition rate of approximately 12% for nursing students in England who fail to complete their degrees. In addition, the overall mean attrition rate for all fields in the UK is 9.2%. However, the average attrition rate for nursing students in the UK is significantly higher at 24.0%, with the highest being 86% and the lowest being 3%. The Nursing Times reports that there has been a 20% decrease in applications to study nursing across the UK, while attrition rates have increased to one in three students dropping out. This is a worrying trend, with the average attrition rate remaining at 25%. Furthermore, from 2014 to 2020, one in eight nursing students in England and Wales did not finish their degrees. Only three full-time equivalent nurses graduate for every eight nursing students.
