Backflow prevention devices are required by law in New York State to prevent contamination of potable water supplies. These devices also help to comply with a law limiting lead content in plumbing fixtures. This is necessary because backflow, the reversal of flow in a water distribution system, can result in the contamination or pollution of public drinking water. All properties, regardless of age, are required to have backflow prevention measures in place. The 2018 Uniform Plumbing Code® specifically addresses backflow prevention and inspections of devices must be documented.
