In this study, the researchers focused on the division of household waste into food and non-food waste and how this impacts the environment. The negative consequences of food waste are highlighted, including increased greenhouse gas emissions and compromised water supplies. The percentage of households with very low food security or disrupted eating patterns due to lack of resources has also increased. The paradox of food waste in low-income households is explored, as well as the potential impact of removing food waste from landfills on emissions. Certain food items, such as celery and corn husks, are identified as problematic for garbage disposals. Overall, the disposal of food waste in landfills is seen as flawed due to the biodegradability of organic materials, and the underlying motivations for food and beverage waste are examined.
